JESS and Westinghouse Sign Agreement to Conduct FEED Study

Jadrová energetická spoločnosť Slovenska, a. s. (JESS), and Westinghouse Electric Company LLC signed a Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) Service Agreement on 28 October 2026. The study will focus on an integrated assessment of the feasibility of deploying AP1000 technology at the Jaslovské Bohunice site. AP1000 is a Generation III+ pressurised water reactor featuring passive safety systems.

The study builds on cooperation between the Slovak Republic and the United States in the field of civil nuclear energy, underpinned by an intergovernmental agreement signed in January 2026. The study will be funded through a grant from the U.S. Government under the FIRST programme.

“The start of work on the FEED study marks a significant milestone for JESS and brings the preparation of the new nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice one step closer to implementation. Thanks to cooperation between the Slovak Republic and the United States under the intergovernmental agreement, we can assess the suitability of deploying AP1000 technology at this site and obtain more detailed technical and project documentation, including a preliminary schedule and budget. The results of the study will provide JESS with an important basis for deciding on the next steps in the project,” said Tomáš Vavruška, CEO of JESS.

The study is expected to be completed within six months. Its outputs will provide important input for assessing the technical and economic feasibility of the project.
